NNPC, Nigerian Police pledge collaboration to tackle attacks on Oil & Gas facilities

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have pledged to work more closely together to curb the attacks on oil and gas facilities across the country by militants and others.

The two agencies made this commitment this week when the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, visited the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Baru drew the attention of the police to the growing insecurity around oil and gas facilities with the latest being the attack by the Niger Delta Avengers on the Chevron gas pipeline in Delta State. The GMD explained that the attacks on oil and gas facilities are taking a toll on the national budget with massive shortfalls in revenue as well huge losses in petroleum products, environmental degradation, refineries shutdown and loss of lives.

He called on the police boss to deploy police personnel to all oil and gas facilities, adding that the corporation was ready to provide whatever support that is needed for enhanced security.

The IGP, on his part, stated that the police was working on a number of strategies to build capacity for effective policing of the difficult terrain where some of the oil and gas facilities are located.

"I will respect it, if i dont get back to the,Chelsea is bigger than me!' Says- Mikel Obi

John Mikel Obi, Chelsea's longest serving player after captain John Terry has admitted that he will respect the decision of the club and it's manager Antonio Conte if they decide to not bring him back to the Chelsea first team and offload him in the winter or summer transfer window.

Mikel, who has won virtually every title at club level, has not featured for Chelsea this season. He hopes to play in Wednesday's English League cup clash against West Ham as the arrival of Frenchman N'Golo Kante further pushed him down the pecking order below Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas, Nathaniel Chalobah and Reuben Loftus-Cheek.

"I hope I will get some playing time against West Ham [in the EFL Cup], but it is down to the manager," said Mikel to journalists.
He has been open and honest with me. I respect him for that. He has explained the situation and I totally understand. When you have been at a club for a long time, these things happen where a club wants to move forward.
"I just have to be professional, work as hard as I can to try and get into the team. I work twice as hard every day and it’s because I appreciate this club. I have been here a long time, have a lot of trophies and memories that will never go away. If I don’t get back in the side, I will respect it. I always respect the football club’s decision. The club is more important than me."
Mikel, who joined Chelsea in 2006, did not start this campaign with the Blues as he was away on international duty with Nigeria at the Olympic Games in Brazil.

Nigerian player Mikel Obi, moves to save Chelsea career

Out-of-favour Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has held showdown talks with Blues manager Antonio Conte after being frozen out of the team by the Italian.

The Nigeria captain has yet to play a single Premier League match for the Stamford Bridge side since the beginning of the season.

Mikel revealed on Monday that he had been working hard to play his way back into the team.

"Fighting every day for my place, like all the guys are. Focus, work hard," the 2013 Europa League winner wrote on Twitter.
Former Italy manager Conte is allegedly not happy with the 29-year-old for opting to represent Nigeria at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where he helped the national Under-23 team win bronze (Nigeria's only medal at the competition).

Mikel, who was signed from Norwegian side Lyn Oslo by the then manager of Chelsea Jose Mourinho in 2016, has however turned in a pair of impressive performances for the Super Eagles, guiding them to a 1-0 victory over Tanzania in their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo in September followed by their 2-1 win against Zambia in their 2018 World Cup qualifier in Ndola on October 9.

With criticisms flying from all directions for his lack of match action at his London club, the 2012 UEFA Champions League winner, who got plenty of playing time under Dutchman Guus Hiddink, has apparently moved to save his club career.
Mikel is competing with in-form N'Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic for a role in defensive midfield and the player, who represented Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, confirmed on Tuesday he had spoken to Conte about his frustrations at the club.

"I hope I will get some playing time against West Ham, but it is down to the manager," the Evening Standard quoted him as saying.
"He has been open and honest with me. I respect him for that. He has explained the situation and I totally understand.

"When you have been at a club for a long time, these things happen where a club wants to move forward.

"I just have to be professional, work as hard as I can to try and get into the team. I work twice as hard every day and it's because I appreciate this club."

Reason why we arrested Reuben Abati says - EFCC

On Tuesday, 25 October , 2016

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has given reasons for the arrest of the former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati on Monday.

The commission said in a post on its official Facebook page that it invited Abati to its headquarters in Abuja to explain his role in an alleged mismanagement of the nation's funds during former President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The EFCC said Abati "honoured an invitation by the EFCC at the agency's headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. He is presently telling operatives of the commission his role in the alleged mismanagement of the nation's resources through his office. We shall keep you posted
On Monday, an EFCC operative told Daily Sun the specific reason Abati was invited because "it has to do with the ONSA money."

The EFCC also arrested and detained former minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed over N1.2 trillion fraud.

Mohammed will tell the EFFCC what he knows about a controversial N1 trillion land swap programme, alleged contracts scam totalling N1billion and collection of N1 billion bribe.

Similarly, the commission has quizzed former special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, in connection with the controversial $2.1 billion arms deal scam in the office of the former Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (read).

It is still unclear how much the anti-graft agency has accused him of collecting from the alleged arms deal cash.

Last week, former minister of state for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro was detained by the anti-graft agency on allegations of money laundering.

Signs of the two Book I wood stove Aki and Pawpaw are no longer on talking terms

For sometime now, there have been worries
and concerns that one of the biggest brands in Nollywood, the Aki and Pawpaw brand, may be running its last course as the brand we used to know.

There have been speculations that all is
not well between the two diminutive figures who many earlier thought are twin brothers  but who are in fact colleagues destiny and fortune brought together.

According to rumours, problem started
between them when one of them, Aki, Chinedu Ikedieze, got married and reportedly asked his performing partner, Osita Iheme, Pawpaw to vacate the flat they shared together for him and his wife. This, according to reports, put a strain on their relationship.

This report got so popular that the duo had to say something on the state of their relationship.

What they said calmed the nerves of their fans, but only momentarily. The duo opined that it was only natural that they go their separate ways after one of them got married. " We cannot live together forever,"Aki offered and Pawpaw too seemed to agree.

Then, all of a sudden, the duo stopped
featuring in the same movies as they used to do.

Recall that none of them was able to attain any measure of popularity on their own until they bonded and became Aki and Pawpaw.

As the fear of their fans was setting to fly
again, the duo put their boots to it, saying they hadn't had a producer in recent times that wanted to feature them together. " If such script comes our way, you will sure see us together again," one of them quipped in an interview.

 How convenient. But the interesting
thing is that the duo still perform at shows as Aki and Pawpaw. This is understandable
"because no corporate outfit wants to have one without the other", whispered a source.
Let's cut out the bullsh**t, all is not well
between these two great actors of our time. The reality of it is what Potpourri had to live with at an event in Enugu last weekend.

When the fuo were to perform, they sure did together, even to the cheers and admiration of their fans, but for someone who has followed them over the years, all the signs were there that there is a crack somewhere even when it is difficult to
lay a finger on it.

No doubt, they appeared as Aki and Pawpaw on stage, but they were definitely Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme. They just didn't connect like Aki and Pawpaw of old. Their act had a bit of life about it, but it just wasn't breathing. It was like watching a man on life- support, frantically trying to convince the doctor not to pull the plug. They fooled the audience though, not Potpourri.

Okay, stage performances are full of tricks and they could have been misread but what aboutt heir relations at their private room backstage?

Potpourri was with them at the private room that had at least 15-20 other artistes, big artistes, for nothing less than five hours. It was a private room that was everything but private   as everyone was chatting with everyone,  dddrinking, joking, taking selfies and generally, not giving a damn about anything, excep smoking. All through the night, Aki and
Pawpaw didn't say a word to each other.  Not even a wink, it was so obvious they were trying to avoid each other and this was after they came back from the stage.
In fact, while Aki sat at one end of the room,
Pawpaw sat at the other end. All the artistes
were poking jokes at one another, and having ahell of a time but Aki and Pawpaw were totally aloof from each other. Another curious thing is that, their management people were not evencrossing paths. Recall that in the good old days, yhey used to share the same management but
now they have separate managements.
For those who knew them in the old days, they
were like Siamese twins, always together, and doing things together. It was almost impossible to see one without the other.
But not any more. The next day, I was
expecting to see them together at the airport, because we were supposed to catch the same flight to Lagos. However, only Aki, Chinedu Ikedieze showed up. All the other artistes that

were in the same room with us were on the
same flight, only Pawpaw was missing.
Later, I got to know that he attended Mr Ibu's
birthday in Enugu that day. Isn't it odd that he
would go alone, without his other half? Such is
the state of their union now that they can't
even stomach hanging out together - unless for
business, no more pleasure.

Okorocha orders traders to vacate Owerri main market

The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, ordered traders at the Ekeukwu Owerri Main Market and street traders in the state capital to relocate to an alternative market located at Relief or the new Egbeada Markets.

The governor warned that the traders of the main markets who refused to relocate would face sanctions.

The governor noted that the deadline issued by his government for the traders to vacate the markets had elapse, adding that he would soon begin the enforcement of the order.

Okorocha's order was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, shortly after he (Okorocha) returned from Germany, where he went with President Muhammadu Buhari on a working visit.

The state government and the traders had been enmeshed in a face-off over the order, which had generated litigations.

The governor warned that the goods seized in the markets by his administration would be given to prisons and orphanages.

He said his administration had exercised restraint in enforcing the order because of the love he had for the traders, stressing that he would be compelled to act if the traders did not comply.

First Lady, Aisha Buhari, is definitely working for the PDP

First Lady, Aisha Buhari, is definitely working for the PDP.
And we can now officially enthrone her as the matriarch of the Wailers.
Now, don't ask me if she has 'officially' joined the PDP yet. But to underscore the fact that Hajia Aisha is currently being tempted to publicly tear her APC membership card (OBJ on my mind), President Muhammadu Buhari told a press conference in Germany last week that "I don't know the party my wife belongs to". So, officially, husband and wife are no longer in the same political party.
My only problem for now is that I don't know whether she belongs to the Makarfi/Wike faction or the Modu Sherrif faction. I also don't know how much the umbrella people paid her to do what she's doing.
Yes, if I or any other journalist or political commentator had said what Mrs. Buhari told BBC Hausa Service about Buhari and his government, I suspect the DSS, Police or EFCC would since have come calling. Yes, they might not resort to pulling down our doors or sneaking up on us like any gang of armed robbers and kidnappers would but bank accounts might have been frozen by now. And Lai Mohammed would be on air, talking about how we had been contracted and generously paid, by the PDP, to discredit Buhari's government.
I think Aisha is coming from our rich and long production line of strong women in the corridors of power and leadership. Soft exterior, steely interior!
In Nigeria, we are not new to presidencies where the women wear the trousers and have the balls (if you'll indulge me that expression).
Those who were close to the Goodluck Jonathan's would swear that it was Mama Peace that had the balls. I was not close to the Umaru Yar'Aduas, but I've heard stories about Hajia Turai. President Olusegun Obasanjo may have been as stubborn as a he-goat, but people close to the then first family attest that his beautiful wife, Stella, was one woman OBJ could not put down.
I don't know how the military leaders coped with their own wives, but legend has it that IBB stood no chance of ever making it to Maryam's bedroom again if he had insisted, with the then Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC), that Asaba should not be the capital of the then about-to-be-created Delta State.
As tough as the goggled Sani Abacha appeared to the rest of us in public, a very beautiful and seemingly harmless Mariam allegedly had him on a short leash. But all these are hearsay. Even in far away US, a quiet and beautiful Hilary was said to have sentenced her all-powerful American President husband, Bill Clinton, to sleeping on the couch when he strayed into browsing Monica Lewinsky's website. Please, don't believe anything I've just said.
If you know the power of women, you'd agree with me that it is not impossible that even the little PMB said about his wife belonging to the kitchen, his living room and 'the other room', may have been cleared by Aisha before PMB dared to say it.
The only tragedy, however, was that PMB said it while standing next to a certain Angela Merkel, Chancellor of his much revered 'Western Germany'.
Yes, in an era where Theresa May recently emerged UK Prime Minister, and Hilary Clinton is clear favourite to succeed Barack Obama as President of the United States (meaning that three of the five most powerful nations in the world would be ruled by women simaultaneously), a Nigerian president, whose brain was not frozen in the stone age (a president who, by the way, shares no blood ties with Donald Trump) tells the world that his wife belongs in the kitchen and "the other room'. Hmm.
Incidentally, I agree with the senator who said the president's comments were supposed to be a joke. Abeg, Madam Aisha, na joke Oga dey joke o!
But, I'm not calling for the president's jugular. Let's not stoke fresh fire for the president on the home front, because he already has enough problems, with the recession, the judiciary, Boko Haram, Niger Delta Avengers, the APC crisis and, of course, The Villa, which we now know, is under a spell, as the Satan's own liaison office on Earth.
Chudi Offodile and the politics of Biafra
I have read quite a few books on the Nigerian civil war, but I must confess that, apart from Chimamanda's Half of A Yellow Sun, Hon. Chudi Offodile's The Politics of Biafra... And the Future of Nigeria (presented to the public penultimate week) has resonated the most with me.
Maybe, it has to do with the fact that, like the Chimamanda and Offodile, I did not also 'see' the war - or, at best, saw it from the jealously protective safety of my mother's bosom. Maybe, because of our not having seen the war, many in my generation have had to rely on the often-one-sided accounts of others to piece our understanding of the Biafran war narrative together.
But, painfully, we live in a country where, rather than say the whole truth of what happened, every participant in those events writes his own memoirs to make himself look good, either by overlooking some not-too-favourable key details or outrightly lying about them.
Consequently, our bookshelves are filled with unverifiable accounts of self-heroics, rendered by soldiers and fringe participants, many of whom only saw the war from the one front they operated from. So, history becomes what these self-aggrandising participants and observers tell us it is. Lies, truths and half-truths. But, as the singer, Omawunmi, would say: If you ask me, na who I go ask?
To make matters worse, we live in an age where they no longer teach Nigerian History in our schools. Meanwhile, our kids, whom we pay an arm and a leg to send to all manner of Montessori schools, are taught about less historical events that took place in old England and America. Of course, this explains why my undergraduate cousin cannot understand why the coronation of a new Oba of Benin is far more important than electing a new governor of Edo State, let alone, some 'stupid' Whiteman exam called WAEC. We seem to have so miseducated ourselves that we now have our values upside-down. So much that we have forgotten that the Oba of Benin is actually a fearsome deity. But that's story for another day.
For now, many of the existing books on the Civil War only serve to add insult to the injury of treacherous irresponsibility in high places - on both the Biafran and the Nigerian sides of the divide.
That is why I'm particularly impressed by Chudi Offodile's outing. For rather than pouring out bile and apportioning blame, he tries to tell the story of the Civil War from the perspective of a dispassionate nation builder. He also pricks the conscience of those who have hitherto lied about their roles in the war and the events that led up to it. He questions the credentials of many 'civil war heroes'. He calls the bluff of the neo-Biafra agitators, many of whom do not even know what they're agitating for.
But what nicks it for me in Chudi Offodile's summation is that for as long as Nigeria remains the one united country we all want it to be, for so long would it be haunted by the ghost of Biafra - until we honestly and dispassionately address those inequities that gave rise to it. Until then, neither North, West, East nor South would sleep easy.
He wrote: "Igbo people have suffered persecution, pogrom, starvation and genocide and, I believe, are best suited to champion the cause of freedom for oppressed peoples in Nigeria and Africa. Biafra should not be situated in the context of self-determination or separatism, but as an ideology of freedom and emancipation of oppressed people anywhere in the world".
I guess, this was also what the late Dim Odimegwu-Ojukwu meant when he alluded to the fact that the prospect of a geographical Biafra is bleak, but that the idea of Biafra would never die. Now, the onus is on we the elite to bury our selfish motives and breakdown this sophisticated grammatical construct in the language that our less-educated people (both North, South East and West) would understand. Chudi Offodile has made that effort.

Anti-Corruption War, Buhari moves against ex Governors

President Muhammadu Buhari is working to recover N57.2 billion from five serving senators just as the President is facing intense pressure to turn off searchlight on chieftains of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) facing corruption cases, his biographer, Prof. John Paden has said.
The amount to be recovered from each senator was also listed in the book.

The book, Muhammadu Buhari: The challenges of leadership in Nigeria, written by Paden, equally revealed that the administration's ongoing investigation of alleged dubious international oil transactions by former minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke and her foreign allies as well as tracking of stolen oil is being hampered by lack of funds.

The book was launched on Monday, October 3 and has drawn varied reactions from Nigerians over some positions and claims.

Detailing various efforts being made by the president in the fight against corruption,Paden said of the nine senators currently facing corruption cases, five are being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices (and other related) Corruption (ICPC) for alleged misappropriation of N57.2 billion.

The senators, according to Buhari's biographer are: Ahmed Sani Yerima who ruled Zamfara State between 1999 and 2007 (N1billion); former governor of Plateau state who recently defected to Buhari's APC from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Joshua Dariye (N1.2 billion) and ex-governor of Gombe State and incumbent Senate Committee Chairman on Appropriation, Danjuma Goje (N25 billion).

Others senators are: former governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Adamu (N15 billion) and son of former governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako), Senator Abdulaziz Nyako (N15 billion).

Although investigation of the senators was inherited by the administration, the president's disposition in the war on corruption has placed more heat on the lawmakers, the author contended.

According to the book, president Buhari has been going through enormous pressure to give preferential treatment to APC leaders fingered in corruption cases but stated that such requests have not received his blessing.

Paden said: "Importantly, in none of these cases (apart from certain military procurement scandals that impacted national security) has the prosecution been sponsored or encouraged by president Buhari. He has kept his hands off the judiciary, despite enormous pressure for him to come to the aid of APC allies."
He further added that, "although a number of senior officials had been tried for corruption prior to the Buhari Presidency, the extent of the current corruption court cases in Nigeria is unprecedented. By February 2016, nine senators (out of 109 in the National Assembly) were facing criminal charges."

On the reason the administration is yet to make desired impact in recovering petro-monies involving Mrs. Madueke and her foreign allies, the book claimed that investigation into the deals were being hampered by lack of funds.

"A major challenge for the Buhari government was how to track stolen oil…At the heart of the oil bunkering scandals was the former minister of Petroleum Resources and her associates," the book alleged .
It stated that "a general lack of funds appeared to hamper the Nigerian component of the investigation… In February, a letter by the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption(PACC) to a United Kingdom -based anti corruption organisation, Global Witness, soliciting assistance in raising funds, revealed that due to the fall in crude oil prices and the general economic downturn, government lacked the needed funds to pursue the recovery of loot."
